Searching for God’s Will
Wouldn’t it be great if Google had a search engine for our life? If all we had to do was type in the search box, “God’s will for my life”, and it would automatically pull up a detailed set of directions showing us His exact path for us and each step we need to take to get there? That would make life SO simple!
We have so many questions! And they can start really early.
- Do I go to THIS college or THAT college?
- Do I move to this new city or stay where I’m at?
- Do I stay single, date, get married?
- Do I buy a new house or car or keep the one I have?
- God, what is my purpose?
- God, what do you want me to do with my life?
They’re good questions and God WANTS us to seek HIM for the answers.
But what if there is a better question? What if, instead of asking, “God, what your will is for my life?”, we FIRST asked, “God, what is your will?” Those are two very different questions. What if the answer to “What is God’s will for my life?” is found AFTER we answer, “What is God’s will?”
Check out Colossians 1:9.
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,
It is possible for you to know and to understand God’s will!
But what we need to understand about God is that He has two different wills. Or two different facets of His will: A UNIVERSAL WILL & A UNIQUE WILL. Sometimes we can confuse the two or ignore one to the detriment of the other.
God’s universal will is all about Jesus and His redemptive purposes in the earth. It can be boiled down to two very simple things:
- Believe in Jesus Christ (John 6:40)
- Be sanctified (1 Thessalonians 4:3)
To be sanctified means that we are cooperating with the Holy Spirit in our lives and progressively becoming more like Jesus.
God’s universal will from Genesis to Revelation is for all people to be saved through a relationship with Jesus and then to live a redemptive life of obedience that is progressively transforming us into the image of Jesus. That is a very BASIC description of God’s universal will for every person.
But then God has a specific, individual, unique will for each one of His children. His unique will for ME will be different than His unique will for you.
But whatever God’s specific will is for you, it will always lead you deeper into His presence.
God DOES have a will for your life: And you may be really confused about what that is. But if you’re searching, can I make a suggestion? Whatever your circumstances are right now, start following His universal will, believing in His Son, placing your faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and living in a relationship of love with Him that is progressively transforming you into His likeness.
When you are surrendered to THIS facet of God’s will, He will guide you, day by day, into the fullness of His unique will for you. He does have a plan and a purpose for your life. You may not have a complete picture of what that looks like, but I promise you, if you will follow Him with the motive to live worthy and to please Him, He will lead you exactly where He wants you to go. Even if your life feels like a total mess right now. He STILL has a purpose for you.

Was great to see you today. JUST NOW read your recent devotional. Excellent and much needed message (David and I both agree). Would you be able to present it (or whatever) at our May 6 CONNECT luncheon?
It was good to see you, Dinah! May 6th might work. Let’s talk!
